Before you begin
Tuning by ear means matching one string to another. You still need one reliable reference note if you want the entire guitar at concert pitch. Tune the low E with the online guitar tuner, a piano, a tuning fork, or another instrument. Then use that string to tune the remaining five.
The fifth-fret method
- Play the low E string at the 5th fret. That note is A. Match the open A string to it.
- Play the A string at the 5th fret. That note is D. Match the open D string.
- Play the D string at the 5th fret. That note is G. Match the open G string.
- Play the G string at the 4th fret. That note is B. Match the open B string.
- Play the B string at the 5th fret. That note is E. Match the open high E string.
The G-to-B step is the exception: use the fourth fret, not the fifth. If you forget this, the B and high E strings will end up a semitone too high.
How to hear whether a string is high or low
Play the reference note and target string one after the other, then together. When two pitches are close but not equal, you may hear a pulsing or wavering sound called beating. The pulses slow as the notes approach each other. Make a small tuning-key adjustment, play again, and notice whether the pulses become slower or faster.
If you cannot tell which direction to turn, deliberately lower the target string slightly and approach the note from below. This makes the direction easier to hear and helps reduce slack around the tuning post and nut.
Using harmonics
Natural harmonics can ring longer and make pitch differences easier to hear. The fifth-fret harmonic on a lower string can be compared with the seventh-fret harmonic on the next string for several string pairs. However, equal-tempered fretted tuning and natural harmonics are not mathematically identical, so harmonics are best used as a listening exercise or rough check rather than the only final test.
Check your work
- Play open-position E, G, C, D, and A chords at normal finger pressure.
- Mute strings you are not testing so sympathetic vibration does not confuse you.
- Make a second pass because changing one string can slightly affect the others.
- Verify with the microphone tuner while your ear is still learning.
Common limitations
Relative tuning can make every string agree while the whole guitar remains sharp or flat. Worn strings, excessive fret pressure, and poor intonation can also make matched open strings produce sour chords. If one string repeatedly drifts, use the tuning stability checklist.
Build the skill
Practice by tuning one string a little flat, predicting how far it must move, and checking the result electronically. Over time, you will recognize slower beats and smaller pitch differences. Ear tuning is especially useful when a device is unavailable, while an electronic tuner remains the quickest way to establish an accurate reference.
