What changes string tension?

String tension depends mainly on pitch, vibrating length, and the string's unit weight. On the same guitar with the same string, raising pitch increases tension and lowering pitch reduces it. Because tension changes roughly with the square of frequency, even a modest pitch change can be noticeable.

Practical rule: Never force a string sharply upward when it already feels unusually tight. Confirm the target octave, string gauge, and exact tuning before continuing.

These percentages describe one unchanged string at one unchanged scale length. Real string sets contain different constructions and gauges, so manufacturer tension charts are better for choosing an exact replacement.

Scale length matters

A longer scale holds more tension at the same pitch and gauge. That is why 25.5-inch guitars and baritone instruments often keep low tunings clearer than shorter-scale guitars. A shorter scale may require a heavier gauge to achieve a similar feel.

Balanced tension versus identical tension

A useful set does not need identical pounds of tension on every string. Players often prefer slightly different tension across wound and plain strings. The goal is a predictable feel, stable attack, clear pitch, and bends that match the player's style.
