What changes string tension?
String tension depends mainly on pitch, vibrating length, and the string's unit weight. On the same guitar with the same string, raising pitch increases tension and lowering pitch reduces it. Because tension changes roughly with the square of frequency, even a modest pitch change can be noticeable.
