Why every string affects the others
A floating tremolo is held between string tension pulling forward and springs pulling backward. Tightening one string increases the total pull, tilts the bridge, and can lower the pitch of the other strings. Loosening one has the opposite effect.
Before tuning
- Confirm the intended tuning and string gauge.
- Check that the strings are installed and stretched.
- Leave the tremolo arm untouched so the bridge floats freely.
- Make sure the guitar is supported in its normal playing position.
- Inspect whether the bridge is near its intended resting angle.
Repeated-pass tuning method
- Tune the low E roughly to pitch.
- Tune A, D, G, B, and high E roughly.
- Return to low E; it will probably have moved.
- Repeat all six strings using progressively smaller corrections.
- When each remains close after a full pass, settle the strings gently.
- Operate the tremolo lightly, let it return to rest, and recheck.
Use the online tuner with moderate pick attack. Low strings can begin sharp after a hard pluck, so read the stable sustain.
A faster crossed tuning sequence
Some players alternate across the neck—low E, high E, A, B, D, G—to distribute tension changes. Either sequence can work; the important part is repeating the entire set instead of perfecting one string only once.
Changing strings

Bridge angle and spring balance
The correct resting angle depends on the tremolo design and manufacturer specification. Fender notes that its floating systems require periodic retuning while string and spring tension are balanced. If the bridge rises too far, falls against the body, or never reaches its intended position, spring-claw adjustment may be required.
Changing tuning or gauge
Moving from standard to a lower tuning reduces string pull, so the springs can draw the bridge backward. Heavier strings increase pull. A floating guitar that is optimized for one tuning may require rebalancing whenever gauge or tuning changes substantially.
Common tuning-stability causes
- New strings have not settled.
- Strings bind at the nut or string tree.
- Post windings slip.
- Pivot points are worn, dirty, or incorrectly adjusted.
- The bridge does not return to the same neutral position.
- Spring or string tension no longer matches the setup.
After using the tremolo arm
If notes return sharp or flat, gently move the arm once in the opposite direction and observe whether the bridge is sticking. This is a diagnostic clue, not a permanent fix. Inspect friction points and setup rather than compensating with constant tuning-key adjustments.
When to block the bridge temporarily
A purpose-made tremolo block can hold the bridge near its normal angle during restringing or setup. It should fit securely without damaging the finish or hardware. Remove it only after string and spring forces are close to balance.
