Why New Guitar Strings Go Out of Tune

Fresh strings normally need time to settle, but persistent slipping can also reveal an installation or hardware problem.

New strings do not literally stretch forever

Players call the settling process “stretching,” but much of the early pitch change comes from wraps tightening around the tuning post, bends seating at the nut and bridge, and small amounts of slack working out of the string path. As these points settle, the string loses tension and goes flat.

How long should settling take?

A correctly installed set often becomes reasonably stable during the first playing session after several gentle stretch-and-retune cycles. Some strings and instruments take longer. If one string continues dropping dramatically after repeated tuning, inspect its winding and bridge attachment rather than endlessly pulling on it.

A safe stretch-and-retune routine

  1. Install the string correctly and bring it gradually to the intended pitch.
  2. Support the guitar and place a few fingers under the string around the middle of its length.
  3. Lift gently—only enough to apply steady tension, not a hard yank.
  4. Repeat at two or three points along the string.
  5. Retune with the online guitar tuner.
  6. Continue until another gentle pass produces little pitch change.
Do not pull aggressively, especially on thin strings. Excessive force can kink or break a string and can damage delicate hardware.

Check the tuning-post winding

Windings should descend neatly down the post without loose overlaps. The string needs enough secure wrap to hold, but filling the entire post creates more material that can settle. Locking tuners generally need fewer wraps. Always follow the tuner's intended string path.

If the wrap visibly slips or the cut end moves, lower the tension and reinstall the string. Avoid repeatedly bending a kinked section back and forth because metal fatigue can cause breakage.

Check the bridge end

On an acoustic guitar, the ball end should seat against the bridge plate rather than hang from the tip of the bridge pin. On an electric, confirm the ball end is fully seated in the tailpiece, tremolo block, or bridge. Classical nylon strings require secure bridge and tuner ties; a slipping knot can look like ordinary stretching.

The nut can imitate string stretch

A string that binds in the nut may store tension on one side of the slot and release it later. Pinging sounds or sudden pitch jumps are clues. A new string gauge may be too wide for the slot. Do not enlarge the nut slot casually; have a technician correct it if necessary.

Temperature matters

A newly restrung guitar may be handled more than usual and moved between rooms. Let it reach a stable temperature before final tuning. Stage lights, direct sun, air conditioning, and a cold vehicle can all change pitch.

When the problem is not the new strings

After the strings stabilize
