Acoustic vs Electric Guitar Tuning

Both instruments use the same standard notes, but their hardware and the way a tuner hears them can change the process.

The target notes are the same

A six-string acoustic and six-string electric guitar normally use standard tuning: E A D G B E from the lowest string to the highest. How the tuner hears each instrument

An acoustic guitar produces enough sound for a phone or laptop microphone in a quiet room. Point the sound hole generally toward the device without placing it so close that the signal distorts. An unplugged solid-body electric is quieter; move closer to the microphone, reduce background noise, and pluck cleanly.

Electric-guitar bridge differences

Fixed bridge

A fixed bridge usually behaves much like an acoustic bridge during tuning. Tune each string and make a second pass.

Floating tremolo

A floating bridge balances string tension against springs. Tightening one string can pull the bridge forward and lower the pitch of the others, so tune in repeated passes. When replacing strings, keeping the same gauge and changing them one at a time can reduce large balance changes.

Locking tremolo

Locking systems use a locking nut and fine tuners. Center the fine tuners before a full setup, unlock the nut to make broad adjustments, tune, lock the nut, and finish with the fine tuners. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for your bridge model.

Acoustic-guitar considerations

Acoustics often use heavier strings and higher tension than electrics. That does not change the note targets, but it can make pitch changes feel more resistant. The bridge pins, saddle, nut, and winding at the tuning post must hold the strings securely. If a newly installed string slips, stop and confirm it is seated correctly.

String gauge and setup

Alternate tunings

Both acoustic and electric guitars can use alternate tunings. Drop D works well on either. Open tunings are common for acoustic fingerstyle and slide, while lower tunings are common on electric guitars. Very low tunings may need heavier strings and setup adjustments. Final tuning routine

  2. Pluck one string at a time with moderate force.
